It is with great honor and pleasure that I have accepted my appointment by the Cyprus Government to serve my country as Chairman of this Council. Having on my side a group of distinguished representatives from the business and the academic community, our vision is to effectively contribute to the achievement of the national targets for high level competitiveness, sustainable economic development and long-term prosperity for the citizens of our country.

The Council's dynamics draw on the government's mandate for the development of independent political advice that will contribute to the above objectives. This power is strengthen by the pre-conditions for full transparency and cooperation with public and private stakeholders.

Following its exit from the economic adjustment programme, the Cypriot economy now enjoys of high growth rates and continuously declining unemployment rates. Now, more than ever before, it's the time for profound changes and reforms, where necessary, in order to eliminate the remaining structural and other distortions, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness and the external resilience of the economy, and enhancing its potential for sustainable development. Now, it is the time for a new long-term planning and orientation of the economy into new development models and sectors that will enable it to reach its full potential and ensure the well-being of today's and future generations of citizens.

Our suggestions will mainly focus on the enhancement of the competitiveness of the Cypriot economy, in the broad sense of competitiveness that includes quality of life and social and environmental sustainability, further to the economic development. That incorporates all the institutions, the policies and other factors that support and maintain value creation by businesses, while ensuring the improvement of citizens' living standards on a sustainable basis.

With the current economic and political climate, both at national level and internationally, the identification and promotion of all potential public-private partnerships as well as the adoption of best practices are of utmost importance for future economic development. The Council will make all possible efforts to promote all the necessary actions that will serve towards a strong, competitive and resilient economy. We call on all the stakeholders who share this vision in cooperation.

Takis Klerides,
Chairman
